The Hair Salon's Oliver Blackaby interview about being a Harriets of Hove Customer

Embracing Sustainability in Style: Oliver Blackaby’s Eco-Friendly Hair Salon Journey

Nestled in the heart of Hove, Oliver Blackaby’s hair salon isn’t just a place for a wonderful haircut; it’s a beacon of environmental responsibility and local collaboration. For over three years, Oliver has been at the forefront of the sustainable beauty movement, blending top-tier salon services with an unwavering commitment to the planet. Right from its inception, Oliver’s salon has set a benchmark for eco-friendly practices, using ethically sourced products and prioritising extensive recycling efforts to minimise its ecological footprint.

The serendipitous location of Harriet’s of Hove just across the street sparked a partnership that exemplifies the power of local synergy. A chance encounter between Oliver needing premium, eco-conscious cleaning supplies and Harriet seeking a local stylist led to a collaboration that extends beyond transactional business interactions, embodying a shared vision for a sustainable community.

Join us as Oliver shares his insights on integrating sustainability into every strand of his business operations, the impact of local partnerships like the one with Harriet’s of Hove, and his visionary plans for the future. This is a story of how aligning values and community support can sculpt not just stunning hairstyles but also a better world.

“I have been the owner of The Hair Salon in Hove for over 3 years. My business is designed to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet with ethically sourced products. We recycle as much of our salon waste and make sure we are using clean and environmentally friendly products as possible, without compromising on a calming and luxury hair experience.

At the time of opening, Harriet’s of Hove was opposite the salon, and purely by chance, that’s how our relationship began. I needed cleaning products and Harriet needed her hair done, so it was a beautiful union.

I was ordering online cleaning products, so to have the service on my doorstep was a no-brainer. I am also a firm believer in supporting local, and you can’t get more local than Harriet’s of Hove.

I love lots of Harriet’s of Hove products, but their refillable service is amazing, being able to get five litres is a godsend. I don’t think it’s about the difference to day-to-day, but knowing that you’re using something that is safe for the environment, and you’re part of a cause means a lot. It’s the fight for the planet that counts.

There is no obvious visual impact, it’s more about being aligned, same ethic means same support. I love what Harriet is doing as a business, and I know she feels the same about the hair salon, it totally reinforces our ethos.

What is nice is we talk regularly, and support each other, that can be from joining the Brighton chamber, or to what Harriet’s of Hove has new, or what marketing and PR has been beneficial in an ethical manner.

I think that as the salon’s message is all about sustainability. It’s the fact that we are in alignment with Harriet’s of Hove, our clients really appreciate it. I do think it goes over some of their heads, but it’s a pleasure when you educate your clients about what we do, they then applaud the support of local businesses with the same ethos. Our plans will always be evolving, however that may be! Especially with the new Community space upstairs, it’s going to be a great place for me!

Moving forward, we will always be open and excited about making anything we are doing as sustainable as possible, what the future holds, who knows!

If there was one piece of advice I would give to other businesses looking to make their operations more sustainable, it’s: you will be surprised at what’s out there, be open-minded and anything is possible. Even the smallest changes will have an impact, and as soon as you start, you’ll notice it will unfold other opportunities. Especially in Brighton and Hove. I feel blessed to have Harriet’s of Hove locally, but with the eco bike, they can also deliver, a visit and a chat is well worth it, Harriet is so resourceful and is always willing to help.

One of the highlights of working with Harriet’s of Hove was at Christmas, we promoted their Xmas hampers, and it worked really well! We even had them under the Xmas tree. It felt lovely to share our love for the environment too.”
