Welcome to Plastic Free July! At Harriet’s of Hove, we’re dedicated not just to serving you with sustainable products but also to leading community efforts in making a substantial environmental impact. This July, we’re excited to launch a special challenge for our eco-conscious customers: commit to 31 refills by the 31st of July and win fantastic prizes, including a Harriet’s of Hove tote bag and a chance to win an exclusive water bottle!

The 31 Refills Challenge

Join us at Harriet’s of Hove this July for our exciting 31 Refills Challenge, designed to inspire and reward your commitment to reducing plastic waste. By participating, you’re taking a meaningful step toward a more sustainable lifestyle, helping our community, and the planet one refill at a time.

Understanding the Challenge: The 31 Refills Challenge is about more than just filling up; it’s a commitment to making environmentally conscious choices every day of the month. Each time you refill, you’re directly reducing the amount of plastic waste that could end up in landfills or oceans.

How It Works:

  1. Pick Up Your Refill Card: Stop by Harriet’s of Hove to get your official refill card. This card will track your progress throughout the challenge.
  2. Earn Stamps: For every product refill you make, from pantry essentials to cleaning supplies, you’ll earn a stamp on your card.
  3. Aim for 31: Your goal is to collect 31 stamps by the end of July. Each stamp not only signifies a refill but also marks a step towards a more sustainable way of living.

Rewards for Your Efforts:

  • Exclusive Tote Bag: Successfully collect 31 stamps and receive an exclusive Harriet’s of Hove tote bag, perfect for your future shopping trips and proudly declaring your commitment as a Harriet’s refiller.
  • Chance to Win a Water Bottle: Completing the challenge also enters you into a draw to win one of several eco-friendly water bottles, each inscribed with “I’m a Harriet’s of Hove Refiller” to celebrate your achievement.

Community and Support: Throughout the challenge, we encourage you to share your journey on social media using #HarrietsOfHovePlasticFree. This is a fantastic way to inspire others and show the impact collective actions can have on our environment. Plus, our team at Harriet’s will be there to support you every step of the way, offering tips and encouragement both in-store and online.

This July, let’s fill up our jars and bottles, not our waters with plastic. Join the 31 Refills Challenge and make a significant impact, proving that small changes can lead to big environmental benefits. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution and create a cleaner, greener future.

What Can You Recycle?

This Plastic Free July, we’re collaborating with The Green Centre to offer recycling of aluminium foil alongside our 31 Refills Challenge. Aluminium foil is often discarded, yet it’s a valuable material that can be recycled multiple times. Here’s what you can bring to Harriet’s of Hove for recycling:

  • Foil Wraps and Containers: These include takeaway containers, ready meal containers, pet food containers, and foil lids from various pots and tubs.
  • Tea Light Foils: Ensure you remove the tiny disc which holds the wick before recycling.
  • Foil Sweet Wrappers: Transform your sweet indulgences into a recycling opportunity.

Preparation Tips:

  • Clean: All items must be thoroughly cleaned; wash off any food residue, remove wax from tea lights, etc.
  • Contain Small Pieces: Due to the lightweight nature of foil, small pieces can easily escape during the recycling process. Wrap them in a larger piece of foil to ensure they don’t get lost.
  • Avoid Contamination: Ensure no flexible plastic is mixed in. A simple test is to compress the material in your hand; if it springs back, it’s flexible plastic, not foil.

The Environmental Benefits

Recycling aluminium foil not only reduces waste but also conserves an enormous amount of energy. Producing new aluminium from raw bauxite is energy-intensive and environmentally taxing. In contrast, recycling aluminium saves about 95% of the energy required to produce new aluminium. By participating in our foil recycling initiative, you’re not just reducing waste; you’re also helping to save energy and protect natural resources.

Additional Activities: To make Plastic Free July even more engaging, keep an eye out for Harriet’s upcoming interview with Sarah Gorrell on BBC Radio Sussex, where she’ll discuss our initiatives in depth. Be sure to follow our social media and sign up for our newsletter to stay informed about the exact date and time, as well as other exciting activities planned for the month.

Plastic Free July at Harriet’s of Hove is an invitation to deepen your environmental commitment and connect with the community. By joining our challenges and following our recycling tips, you contribute to a larger movement towards sustainability. So, let’s refill, recycle, and make a lasting impact this July. Your efforts are crucial to our collective journey towards a greener future.

Ready to join us? Plan your 31 refills and participate in our recycling efforts to make this Plastic Free July a transformative experience for our community and beyond.
